What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, active infection, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma to the teeth or mouth that requires immediate treatment. Common dental emergencies we treat include:
Severe toothache: Intense, throbbing tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter medication — often caused by an infected or dying pulp that needs emergency root canal treatment.
Dental abscess: A pocket of infection at the root of a tooth causing swelling, pain, fever, or a foul taste in the mouth. Abscesses require urgent treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
Knocked-out tooth: A tooth completely displaced from its socket due to trauma. Time is critical — reimplantation is most successful within 30 minutes of the injury. Call immediately.
Cracked or broken tooth: A tooth that has fractured from trauma, biting on a hard object, or grinding. Depending on the severity, endodontic treatment can save the tooth.
Dislodged tooth: A tooth pushed into, out of, or sideways from its normal position due to trauma. Requires stabilization and possible root canal treatment.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-out tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root). If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline — do not scrub. Try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call (704) 375-4252 immediately. Time is critical.
Severe pain: Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil) for pain and swelling. Avoid aspirin directly on the gum — it can burn tissue. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Call (704) 375-4252 for a same-day appointment.
Swelling or abscess: Do not attempt to drain it yourself. Rinse with warm salt water. Call (704) 375-4252 immediately — infections can spread rapidly and require urgent treatment.
Same-Day Emergency Appointments

After-Hours Emergencies
If you experience a dental emergency outside of office hours (Monday–Thursday 8am–5pm, Friday 8am–2pm), call (704) 375-4252 and follow the instructions for after-hours emergencies. For life-threatening emergencies involving difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of consciousness, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
