Turn Your Tooth White Again with Internal Bleaching
Tooth discoloration after a root canal
The two types of tooth discoloration are extrinsic, which occurs on the tooth’s outer layer, and intrinsic, which is discoloration of the inner layers.
Intrinsic stains can occur from certain medications or tooth trauma, but one of the most common causes is a root canal.
Although root canal procedures can save a damaged tooth, if done improperly they can cause bacteria or blood to enter your pulp chamber during the treatment. This results in discoloration over time.
If your root canal treatment is causing your tooth discoloration, internal bleaching from our dentist Ramesh K. Sunar, DMD, may be just what you need.
Internal bleaching goes beyond the surface
Beneath your tooth’s enamel is the dentin — the inner structure of your tooth. If your enamel experiences discoloration, teeth whitening can usually treat it. Your dentin, on the other hand, remains discolored.
Unlike normal whitening treatments, which only targets surface stains, internal bleaching goes beyond your tooth’s surface and addresses discoloration on the inside.
Minor surgery with major results
Internal bleaching is a minor surgical procedure when internal decay has caused discoloration. Before your procedure, Dr. Sunar numbs your surrounding gum tissue and uses a rubber dam to isolate your tooth. He then opens up the back of your tooth by making a small hole. The dam prevents bacteria from entering your tooth.
After Dr. Sunar opens your tooth, he withdraws the material causing your discoloration. Once he removes it all, he places a bleaching agent in your tooth, directly in the pulp chamber. It’s normal to experience some minimal tooth sensitivity due to the bleaching agents, but these symptoms resolve on their own shortly.
The bleaching agents stay in your tooth for about two to three days. Afterward, Dr. Sunar removes them during your follow-up appointment.
