Endodontics

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on treating dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the roots of your teeth. Dental pulp refers to the most inner part of the tooth that contains nerves, cells, and blood vessels vital to dental health. This pulp is responsible for your sensitivity to hot and cold. The most commonly practiced endodontic procedure is root canal treatment, which removes damaged pulp and cleans out the soft tissues inside the tooth.

What’s the difference between an endodontist and a dentist?

While dentists and endodontists both belong to dentistry as a whole, the latter specializes in a specific area of the tooth. Almost any dentist can treat issues related to cavity fillings, cosmetic procedures, and your overall dental health. Think of your dentist as you would your primary dental care physician. However, an endodontist receives additional training to treat specific dental injuries. As an expert endodontist, Dr. Sunar can diagnose and treat your tooth pain with targeted procedures.

When should you see an endodontist?

Dr. Sunar recommends that you make an appointment at Charlotte Root Canal Center if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Gum swelling and tenderness

  • Tooth discoloration

  • Tooth decay

  • Cracked or chipped tooth

  • Continuous sensitivity to cold and heat

  • Pulp inflammation or infection

During your appointment with Dr. Sunar, he identifies the source of pain and recommends a comprehensive treatment option both to get you healthy again and avoid further complications down the line.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment targets the inner part of the tooth where the soft tissue is damaged. In this case, he anesthetizes the affected area and removes any damaged tissue or nerve. From there, he places a permanent crown on the treatment site to reduce the chances of recurring pain and damage. Root canal treatment helps you manage swelling, toothache, and infection expediently and painlessly. Whether you’ve experienced tooth pain or think you might have an inflamed gum, get in touch with Dr. Sunar by phone or online for stellar endodontic treatment.
